I'm Into Old Art Lady Style (And Other Awesome Things Sopie Buhai Recently Said)...

image via  into the gloss

I'm currently in the midst of a rather significant girl crush on Sophie Buhai... The former Vena Cava co-founder recently moved back to her home state of California where she's launched a killer line of sculptural jewelry, is selling a curated selection of artful objects, and is doing interiors projects. (She's a triple threat that one.)

Her aesthetic, at once minimal and warm, is utterly compelling...as are several quotes I've come across in recent interviews (see: girl crush).

Herewith my faves courtesy of Ms. Buhai...

"So I launched my collection, which I sell from my own website and also wholesale to specialty boutiques, like The Line, but also the Georgia O’Keefe Museum and the Cooper Hewitt because I’m into museum women. I’m into old art lady style. I hope Georgia would have worn my jewelry if she were still alive. Maybe if I was cool enough to cross paths with her."

This one hits particularly close to home, as "old art lady style," besides being a brilliant description, also happens to me my current sartorial jam (i.e. black tunic tops, chunky bracelets, long-line cardigans, et al.)

Wisdom...According to Jesse, Jeana, and Louise

image via Ye Rin Mok via Apiece Apart

I found myself scrolling through Apiece Apart's lovely Product Stories for far longer than I'd like to admit this weekend. (Hey, it was rainy, Internet binging is acceptable on rainy days, yes?)

Especially good are the profiles, with their gorgeous voyeuristic photos and poignant little nuggets of wisdom. My favorites below...

On balance and simplicity via clothing designer Jesse Kamm:

In my life, I know that I deserve to be a sane person, and I do not want to take anxiety medication to survive my year. I know that I need time away to be sane, so I take it. Not because I am spoiled, but because I value my existence as a happy, balanced person. Everyone deserves this.

These are a few things I do during the year, so that I can afford to spend it elsewhere: I buy fine pieces that cost more, but which are well built, because I know that the price-per-wear will end up in my favor, and I do not shop frivolously. I don’t go out to lots of fancy dinners. I don’t get manicures and pedicures. We all choose how to allocate our earnings, and I choose to save mine for leisure, because that is what makes me happy. My life is luxurious, but not in the way most people see luxury. It is luxurious because I have freedom, and for me, freedom is wealth.

Fearless creating and the secret to marriage happiness per artist Louise Bonnet:

A painter friend sent me this link to a letter Sol Lewitt sent to Eva Hesse and it basically is the best thing relating to work I have ever read. In short: not being afraid to make bad stuff, just do it. Not trying to be cool, but making your own uncool. To shock yourself at how bad you can be and see where it goes. Also important for life; go on date night. A babysitter is cheaper than a divorce lawyer.

Be polite. Learn everyday. Always treat people who work for you well. Give.

Lise Silva (i.e. the maker of our current obsession)

We have a tendency to fall into group obsessions at the studio. Recent objects of our collective fixation have included Topo Chico,  staghorn ferns, Raquel Allegra, the Evan with chicken at Taco Joint, and Le Labo Santal 33 (we're all about the high/low).

Of late, Lise Silva's knotted necklaces have joined the list.

It started with that ivory "vibration knot" action above. I almost bought it at Christine's pop up shop a few weeks ago, but in a rare moment of responsibility and frugality, I decided to abstain from purchasing. Sam showed up at the same pop up a couple of hours later and snapped it up. Catie also coveted the "vibration knot" but ended up ordering the "entrance knot" online.  She and Sam eventually traded necklaces and currently have them in heavy rotation. Watching the two of them sport their Silva's has made me totally regret my initial decision. (Who am I kidding... I'm jealous every time I see one of them donning that groovy fiber goodness.)

I may have just purchased my own Silva.

Photos forthcoming.

Low Maintenance Girl Crush: Leslie Fremar

images via into the gloss

As I was parked in front of the mirror this weekend, clumsily wielding a curling iron in an attempt to approximate some messy cool-girl wave action into my otherwise volume-challenged hair, I was envying Leslie Fremar. Big time.

The stylist is decidedly low maintenance. In fact, I think it's safe to assume that the former protégé to Anna Wintour and Tonne Goodman (another poster girl for the less-is-more beauty ethos) doesn't even own a curling iron.

Other things Fremar doesn't do:
  1. Wash her hair every day
  2. Wash her face (this one I can't really get behind... I am obsessed with the face washing)
  3. Wear makeup very often

But the real mind blower (and, let's face it, key to the whole low maintenance equation) is the fact that when she looks in the mirror with nothing on, she thinks, wait for it, she looks fine.

Revolutionary, yes?

And if she's tired, she just throws on those black specs above to detract from the whole situation and calls it a day.

Leslie Fremar you are my hero. Well, with the exception of that whole face washing thing. But, everything else. Yes and yes.

Calder...

I'm smitten with Calder,  Amanda Blake's line of artist-inspired (think: Nakashima and Arp) understated, made-to-last cotton basics.

But I'm especially loving her look books. The art direction and styling is perfection... No surprise given that Collection 2 was shot by Blakes's cousin-in-law Sophia Coppola in her elegant, minimal (totally. freaking. perfect.) New York apartment.

And then there's collection 3 shot by Patrick Fraser in Jason Schwartzman and Brady Cunningham's killer mid-century abode. I'm not gonna lie friends, this situation is inducing some serious house envy... it makes me want to rip everything out of my house and totally start over.

Thinking it make more sense to just by the black dress in that second image below.

Thanks Amanda...

Earth: Water/Mountain (Or Yet Another Chance to Write About Rocks and Inspiring Ladies)

That in the past week I've gotten all misty over big slabs of stone (and other pretty things found in nature) and marveled at my good fortune in having a cadre of wickedly creative/lovely/inspiring lady friends seems awfully timely given last night's adventures.

My (creative/lovely/inspiring) friend, jewelry designer Julie Cohn along with the (equally creative/lovely/inspiring) stylist Jan Yeung invited Sam and I and a group of our friends to a private preview of the upcoming exhibit EARTH: Water/ Mountain -- Artists Studies of Nature at Jan's pop-up gallery 33at2133.

The show features 33 objects that "reveal artist's perspective on nature through fine art, functional objects created from nature, symbols of nature, landscapes and design."

Among the insanely beautiful creations are a Qing dynasty scholar's rock, lacquered stones, Julie's stunning wearable works of art, a Nakashima bench, Jan's husband Ka Yeung's exquisite photographs and "Insincere Landscapes," and one of Il Lee's memorizing ballpoint works. And friends, every. single. piece. totally and completely blew my mind.

Full stop.

My Dallas friends can take in the exhibit (and purchase pieces) at 33at2133 this Friday from 6:30 to 9 pm and Saturday from 1 to 6 pm or by appointment for a limited time. I would highly recommend an in-person visit (see: "totally and completely blew my mind").

The rest of you lovely peeps can see the show in its entirety (and yes also purchase, and trust me, you will want to purchase something) on the the gallery's website starting Saturday.

In the meantime, here's a sneak peek of some of the loveliness.

Thank you Jan and Julie for the wholly magical evening.

Oh Elsa...

Duane Michals portrait of Peretti at her worktable, in Halston, 1974. From the Condé Nast archive via Vanity Fair .

I didn't just listen to the TED Radio Hour during our epic roadtrip to Florida. I also read. A lot. Vanity Fair, Vogue, Porter, back issues of The Gentlewoman, Bon Appétit, The New Yorker, The World of Interiors... You name it; I read it.

And from those hundreds of pages consumed during read-fest 2014, I think my favorite image was the above one of Elsa Peretti from this (excellent) Vanity Fair piece.

Umm.. Giant cactus, terra-cotta pot, sleek wood desk, sculptural accessories and vessels, chic cream silk blouse? Yes, please.

The shot was taken in 1974, yet it could be your coolest artist friend at home today. Totally timeless. Totally perfect. I am smitten.

And speaking of Madame Peretti, these three pretties conjured up by the brilliant designer have been on my wish list for eons...

Oh Camille...

via Vogue Paris

via Cate St. Hill (also a rather stellar blog...)

I professed my love for Camille Bidault-Waddington in last week's loving list, but, truth is, I've been nursing a full-blown girl crush on the French stylist for a while. Said crush has had me on a bit of a Camille-centric Google binge over the past couple of days, during which, I found this stellar nugget:

"Rigorously read all the magazines on the market. Go to the museum — Google Images doesn’t count. Be modest, and work your arse off!” (via business of fashion.)

Bidault-Waddington was dispensing advice for aspiring stylists trying to break into today’s fashion industry, though I think it's pretty spot-on advice for anyone in a remotely creative field... Anytime someone asks me how to get inspired, I inevitably tell them to hit the museum, take a road trip, explore a new neighborhood, plow through a few obscure magazines, and, for the love of Francis, get. off. the. computer.

Now if I could only follow my own damn advice. Oy vey.

If It Ain't Broken...

This homage to Jenna Lyon's commitment to the "coat over shoulders"on Style Carrot (spotted via Kelly's pinterest) made me smile this morning. You just gotta respect someone who is staunchly embraces a look -- like, say, a black every. single. day. Hypothetically, of course.

Maria...

Images from top: T MagazineWSJ Magazine / Paper  /  style.com / T Magazine / ZERO + Maria Cornejo tumblr / Original Slope

I am in the midst of what can only be described as a full-blown girl crush extraordinaire on Maria Cornejo. The gorgeous and crazy sexy 51-year old designer, mother, wife, all around cool lady credits her husband photographer Mark Borthwick for teaching her to “find beauty in the unexpected;” is committed to "disconnecting after office hours," noting that when she's not working her "favorite thing to do is to lie in bed and read, or to have breakfast in bed with my husband and then go for a bike ride;" and counts chocolate, vitamins, and a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge among her essentials.

What's not to love?

Then there's the matter of her sculptural ready-to-wear collection, Zero + Maria Cornejo... Minimal yet quietly lavish, they are the clothes of my dreams.

Sigh.

Hey Pretty Lady

In a world obsessed with Photoshop perfection, there really is nothing more modern, more interesting, more appealing, and, well, prettier than real beauty. Yes?

(Oh and I'm going to use that lovely photo of Elizabeth Moss above to profess my utter and complete obsession with Mad Men. I'm on episode 1 of season 5 after a major binge (clearly, I'm a little late to the game), and, friends, I am sucked in. It's a bad scene; I'm not gonna lie.)
