Some Summer Things...

I toyed with the idea of calling this post "Some Summer Essentials", but "essentials" somehow felt a bit too dramatic to me, as really the only thing that comes close to qualifying as a true essential for getting through summer in Texas is a place to swim (thankfully we have that covered this year) and access to a rockin' AC...

But (while not technically essentials), there are a few things that are making me a lot happier this summer, so I thought it would be fun to share them with you guys. Here goes.

  • Loads of Reading Material -- For me, summer is the season of reading. Usually I skew toward light stuff during the hot months (a groaning stack of decor magazines, Bossypants), but in an attempt to stay honest to my "get smart" resolution from back in January, I just subscribed to Newsweek (I love that Tina Brown) and Vanity Fair (it boasts lots of smart, detailed articles in between the all the froth). I also just started Jennifer Egan's A Visit from the Goon Squad and can't put it down.

  • Trish McEvoy Lipgloss in (I'm cringing as I write this) "sexy" -- A really excellent shimmery nude lipgloss... + it stays on forever and isn't sticky (not an easy feat).

  • Iced Green Tea -- I have no particular brand allegiance, but I just picked up the green & white tea from Stash at Whole Foods, and I'm quickly becoming hooked. It's just more mellow than standard green tea. I make a big pitcher to keep in the fridge every few days.

  • Limes -- In everything...sparkling water, plain water, beer, gin and tonics (ideally with extra lime). I buy an embarrassing amount of limes at the store each week. I'm pretty certain that the check-out guy thinks I'm crazy.

  • A Summer Bag -- I like to carry a bag in the summer that can withstand our increased mayhem... I've been going back-and-forth between my L.L. Bean hunter's tote bag and my newly acquired Proud Mary diamante tote.

  • One Love Organics Multi-Balm -- I'm a little bit addicted to this magical stuff. I use it on my legs, under my eyes, on the girlie's cheeks, on wispy flyaways, on our feet. It's amazing...truly.

  • Jo Malone Sweet Lime and Cedar Body Oil -- (Again with the lime.) This is my summer go-to in lieu of perfume, as covers fragrance and moisturizer in one step. It also gives a little sheen (but not shimmer), which is nice.

  • Solar Recover -- Being in the pool/sun as much as we are has resulted in some crazy dry skin, so we are literally blowing through this stuff. I keep it in the fridge and just spray the whole family down after our baths. Plus it's got this groovy kind of hippie vibe going on, which I'm pretty partial to.

  • Elizabeth Dehn Face Spray -- Michelle sent this my way a while back, and I'm using it all the time. It's just really lovely and refreshing and makes my face look all happy and glowy (as opposed to sweaty and sad, which is how it usually looks in the summer).

So...Is there anything making you particularly happy of late?

Love this post. Thinking about the things that are making me happy. Fresh strawberries, Sangria Saturdays, good books (just finished The Lacuna, by Barbara Kingsolver), flip-flop tan lines, the list goes on and on...

The freckles on my nose that appear when the sun chooses to show its face around here, our picnic blanket, my trusty Burt's Bees tinted lip balm and that my kids seem to love books as much as me and are willing to lounge around on the picnic blanket all afternoon and read... ;)

I just started Egan's newest as well and think it's great. Have you read her book The Keep? Such a great read...

My summer scent is Odin 01 cologne. LOVING it.

Thanks for sharing! I am overwhelmed in Sephora and the beauty aisles - which things work? which smell nice after an hour? does it work? So I really, really appreciate some recommendations. And as always, it's not about the stuff, but about stuff that just helps living life more simply and having fun.

Love the post!

Ooo, I am totally fixated on your Proud Mary tote. And I love lovely scented moisturizing products, thanks for all the new-to-me picks.

I'm furiously working my way through the Stieg Larsson books...I don't usually follow the popular tide, but these are so, so good. I'm losing sleep over them. Love a powerful, smart female character. Ballsy too. :0)

p.s.-I have a sweet giveaway starting today that would be perfect for your adorable girlies. Stop by and check it out!

This post made me feel so utterly summery, despite being in the midst of a very windy and drizzly Hurricane Season here in Florida. A Visit from the Goon Squad is on my reading list too. Glad to know it's as riveting as I want it to be xo

Very pretty grouping of summer essentials. I love those proud mary bags. Funny, the name of one of my favorite perfumes (carnal flower) also makes me cringe a little, when asked what I'm wearing.

Do you guys have Trader Joes out there? If so, try the Iced Green and White tea with a hint of mint - that's really what's it's called. I live on it on hot days when I'm at home!

Your description of the Solar recover had me rushing over to order it -- sounds so great!

My current fave for dry skin: Egyption Majic! http://www.amazon.com/Egyptian-Magic-Jar/dp/B000WNLFBI. I found it at Whole Foods -- and am in love, it gives you a nice 'dewy' look and moisturizes sooo well. It's also great for burns and bruises.

Alice -- (huge sigh as i'm writing this) we do not have a Trader Joes...

it's a sad state of affairs!

I just had to hide my wallet - you always have the best things and then I want to copy you on everything. LOVE! I use Elizabeth Dehn's face spray and it's incredible - the perfect spray for the summer. I'm picking up the book this weekend to add to my huge summer stack...I need to get reading!

Mmmm! I love the iced tea from an aromatic tea. Here in Switzerland I buy way too much Alp Tea. Why do I not make my own?! Thanks!!!

Not summer-related, but I tried red lipstick... Loved it... although, it will admit it was while I was [by myself] in the car- waiting for my son and his friends to finish their boy scout class :).

Joslyn! I can't believe that you're using One Love's balm. Isn't it the best? I LOVE it. Like, luuurve. I've been using their whole line for the last few months. It's perfect. And, um, not to be pushy, but it's on sale in our Pop-Up Shop this week.

good time to stock up. :)

Also, Jo Malone... always perfect, right? I'm an orange blossom gal, but I'm curious to try sweet lime.

Lipton makes a green tea with blueberries and acai berry and I drink it every morning, I've never tried it iced but I think I will this weekend.
