Valentine's lilacs from sweet hubby...

The entire tenor of the weekend was set by waking up to a literal winter wonderland on Friday morning, the trees laden with the results of a 14 hour straight snowfall. This was respectable snow, newsworthy snow...none of our usually "light dusting" or a puny "wintery mix."

It was magical.

And it stayed on the ground through the weekend, prolonging that sort of heightened excitement inevitable when your surroundings get turned slightly upside down, in the best possible way of course.

This was also a friendly snow...the roads were easily navigable, so we could still celebrate a friend's birthday with dinner out on Friday and attend a 50th wedding anniversary party on Saturday (where the girlies gleefully played with dear friends we rarely see.) + with that blanket of white on the ground, the light was fantastic, which is always nice given the gray skies we've had of late.

We capped the weekend off with an altogether lovely Valentine's Day. There was breakfast out with the girlies, followed by a day of cooking and Olympics viewing (we love the Olympics) and a fantastic family dinner complete with candles and champagne (for Bryan and me) and sparkling grape juice (for the girlies) oh and a truly epic chocolate cake...

Hope your weekend was fantastic!

What a lovely post. The snow was something. So you had electricity and heat in your part of town? We were knocked out for Thursday night through the wee hours of Saturday. We were pioneers... sort of.

But all in all, a very user friendly winter wonderland.
The pics of the kids are great.

Lovely valentines pics:)I wanted to let you know that I made you chicken pot pie recipe from your foodie blog (tweaked it to make it vegetarian) and it was a-mazing! My husband and I had my sister and brother in law over and it was gone in no time! Thanks for sharing, it will be a staple winter meal in my house forever.

Looks like a nice weekend. We had snow in Atlanta, too.
That chocolate cake does sound great! It can't be bad if it's Ruth Reichl...
I've been wanting to try this recipe for molten chocolate cakes:

We had the same kind of snow - magical and friendly (what great way to put it). It was a real treat, since we also just mostly get ice or a wintry mix around here.

We drove around Dallas overnight Friday night (or it was probably early Saturday morning) and I was amazed at all the snow! We were on our way to Austin for a little mini vacation. It's been nice here compared to Nebraska though.

Gorgeous lilacs!

What is the paint color on your wall? It is the perfect grey blue.

hi julie -- it's actually benjamin moore decorator white, the light is just making it look slightly grey ;-)

That was really a beautifully written post, Joslyn. I could almost feel the magic you describe. Up here in Chicago? Well, snow's not that cool of a thing anymore. Not in February at least! Your pictures are a delight.

what is that i spy next to the lilacs?

the girlies three knew how i didn't exactly want to part with that antica farmacista - even if it was for you! - and bought me my own for valentine's day.

can mary and i borrow that photo of the chocolate and raspberries for t.ruffles? it's gorgeous. and it wouldn't even need any of my words.

xoxo. your prolific friend. obviously.
