Some Decorating Wisdom

A few weeks ago the über clever Chelsea featured some pretty excellent decorating tips from Rita Konig.

They all resonated in some way to me, but the first two really stood out, as they were nice reminders in my constant desire to finish a room immediately and to purge anything I’m no longer using. I’ve kicked myself many times after getting rid of something that was filled with nostalgia because it was a bit overly wonky...

Check out all the tips here.

“Don't think that you need to decorate in one go. Decorating a house takes a while and it always looks better when it has evolved over time. You will also be able to afford much nicer things if you do this.”

“It doesn't necessarily follow that if everything in the room is beautiful you end up with a beautiful room. I think the best rooms are those that have a mix of things and an ugly lamp with a crooked shade, or an inherited table or the rug from your childhood bedroom. These are the things that add texture and life to a room.”

Great tips, and I love the ones you highlighted. I constantly nag myself about the fact that our house isn't decorated completely yet, but I need to remind myself to take my time and make purchases and decisions only when they're really right, not just to have it done. Thanks!

I love that picture. It always reminds me that home is really a feeling, rather than a perfectly designed room. Her rooms have such feeling in them. Although I think it takes a lot more talent to put together a beautifully imperfect room.

Rachel: well said about the home being a feeling. I agree!

Jos: Your favorites were mine, too. Both are starred in my Google reader. Thanks for sharing them; I needed the reminder! :)

Great decorating tips to live by. I wish I could say I haven't made the mistake of throwing something away only to miss it when its gone. This will hopefully help me to stop and think before doing my cleaning out modes

When you decorate in one go and have a limited income, more often than not the whole place ends up a replica of an Ikea catalog. Which is ok, I guess but I definitely prefer something more personal & varied and less mass-produced. I'm slowly convincing my boyfriend. It doesn't hurt that our Ikea couch is already in terrible shape.

I really like these decorating tips. They capture the realism of decorating more than anything else I've read.
