The Pear

If you've visited this blog before, you've heard mention of Bryan’s burgeoning woodworking hobby (specifically here and here.) Over the past year or so, he’s been slowly acquiring all the necessary tools (lathe, band saw, planes, etc…) and a scarily enormous stack of wood is piling up in the garage ready to be formed into multiple masterpieces … not that there’s any time to actually cultivate the hobby, but when there is by god, he’ll be ready.

We had big plans to make this a handmade Christmas of sorts by crafting a single, special item for each person on our list (i.e. a bowl or tray) and ultimately decided on a pear modeled after a glass one we already own. (Let’s be clear here, I was just helping with the design, all of the actual work was Bryan’s domain.)

But as always in our house, aspirations outweighed available time, and it took three full months of stolen moments to create a single pear. It was determined that the pear would be gifted to Bryan’s mother since it was created from the Siberian elm cut from his parent’s yard -- and there's the fact that she gave birth to him and raised him and all…

It’s pretty, yes? Truth be told I’m massively proud of him.

Oh darn Jos, I thought it was for us! It would look great at Chez Upper Pond. Bryan should be VERY proud of his work...it's beautiful!

My hubby, who is supposed to be studying, actually stopped what he was doing to gape over my shoulder at this gorgeous pear. He wanted to know what kind of wood it is, who made it, etc. A high compliment coming from someone who's very hard to impress.

oh letter9 your husband made Bryan's entire year. Seriously... The pear body is made of Siberian Elm, and the stem is carved from African Blackwood.

i love this! how beautiful. you should be proud! funnily enough, my british grandmother send me a carved pear for christmas this year; it looks a little skinnier and more mottled than the one your husband did. what a funny coincidence, though...maybe he is part of a larger trend!
