Blogger's Favorites -- Emma of Emmas Designblogg

image laurie frankel via emmas designblogg

Rarely does a day go by that I don't literally gasp out loud at something I've spotted on Emma's blog. Her eye is unerring; every single image is perfection.

And yes, I realize that this is technically impossible and perhaps a smidge nutty, but on most days I'm so overwhelmed by the sheer awesomeness (I know, I know, not a word...) of what she posts that I would like to, well... move into her blog. Just live in all those photos. Crazy, no?

Ok, so of course her favorites are fantastic, and I'm thrilled that she's agreed to share them with us this week.

Without further ado, herewith Emma's list. Enjoy and have a splendid weekend!

Mint! The smell and the taste, in fresh mint tea, salads, cocktails, green pea soup, various desserts and even in perfumes. It's so refreshing! Japanese fashion label Commes des Garçons makes a wonderful scent called Peppermint, a part of the Sherbet Series 5 range. It's very hard to find here, so luckily I don't have to share my scent with too many people.

Creating and crafting. With my kids or alone, it always leaves me feeling very satisfied, as if I accomplished something very important. Also, it's such a nice feeling to be able to say that you made something yourself!

Bare light bulbs. The simple shape of a classic clear bulb, preferably with a porcelain socket and fabric cord, is what my style really boils down to. It's totally practical, simple and at the same time very beautiful.

Country road trips with my boyfriend, when we have time to stop at every little roadside flea market, go swimming in a lake if we pass one, have a small picnic or eat at some shabby greasy spoon place. Perhaps we even stay the night in a hostel or hotel in some strange small town we've never seen before. The main thing is that we have no plans, no schedule and no pressure to really do anything at all.

Fairy lights. There is nothing that adds coziness to a room so instantly as a chain of fairy lights! Drape them around a window instead of curtains or put them in a glass jar or a loosely woven basket, or put them behind a piece of furniture for a more subtle glow. Or let them worm along the table for a nice holiday table setting.

Amsterdam! This city is my absolute favorite place in the world! This is where I go for inspiration, relaxation and that feeling of freedom that only can come from a place where everything is allowed. There is a buzz of creativity in the streets of Amsterdam that I haven't experienced anywhere else, as if the city itself is whispering "Do something, it doesn't matter what or if the outcome is perfect, just create something new and exciting!" Add to that all of the wonderful restaurants, shops and museums, and the beauty of the old houses and canals, and you have this perfect place.

Chuck Taylor's. These are the only style of shoes I've been wearing for the last 5 years or so. No matter the occasion (ok, weddings excluded) or weather, it's always a good time for chuck's! In the winter I wear the fur lined leather version, and the rest of the year I switch between my other five pairs. I buy a new pair every year, but really the old worn out ones are the best.

Sunshine and heat, the warmer the better. I would live in a sauna if I could. And sunshine really does wonders for my energy levels and mood. I live in Sweden, so both these things are pretty rare here, but maybe that is what makes them so precious to me.

Baking. When I'm stressed and overwhelmed, baking always makes me relaxed. I think it's because you really have to concentrate and follow the recipe, because if you don't it's all going to be a big mess (but hopefully a delicious mess that you can eat anyway, and then you don't have to share…), so you have to let your worries go for a while. And then of course you get the reward of having some lovely sweets when you are done. Oh, and the smell of freshly baked cookies has got to be the easiest way to make your house feel like a home!

When the cherry trees blossom in spring. There is something so encouraging about those fragile pink blooms on the bare branches, a promise that Spring will actually win over Winter this year too.

Just A Few Random Bits...

image via garance dore

And these are indeed random, so you'll have to hang with me here friends ;-)

First up, jeans. Or more specifically the fact that I've recently taken to lopping off the bottom of my jeans with dull scissors.

It all started with a brand new pair of jeans and a bad hem job. In an act of sheer desperation, I tried to "repair" said jeans and have since been walking around town donning skinny jeans that look as if a crazy lady lopped off the bottom of them with dull scissors (which is, as noted above, exactly the case.)

Then I read/saw this and felt better.

So there's that.

Then there's this NYT article... It's been oft-blogged, so I know you've probably already seen it, but I had to mention it too, specifically because of this passage:

"Ms. Brechbuehler, who is Swiss, added: “In Switzerland, if you buy a pair of shoes, you’ll have them for 10 years. They have a different attitude toward consuming, and I think Robert and his family do, too.”

Which pretty much sums up (at least for me) an ideal mindset about consumption...

And finally, there's this v. cool video shot by my friend Ben of a demonstration held here in Dallas to raise awareness about homelessness. The video is fantastic, and the group is especially fantastic. Take a peek.

And speaking of homelessness, I've had Emily's genius idea bookmarked forever. I'm not sure why I haven't done this yet. It's officially moving to the tippy top of my to-do list...

A Party + Dallas Bloggers

Little Bean and Dallas Child Magazine are co-hosting a trunk show for the super dreamy line Clover NY this Friday. Clover's designer will be there + there will be champagne, cupcakes and face painting.

If you're in Dallas, you should definitely pop by (Christine throws the best parties...it's truth.)

And speaking of Dallas Child Magazine, they just included me in a fun feature entitled "The Blog Squad" alongside some pretty rockin ladies (specifically Kristie, Beth, Courtney and Christine.) If you want, you can take a peek at the article here or here...so fun!

Scenes from The Week (+ A Winner)

Some highlights (just a few) from our trip to the beach (in no particular order):
  1. Rainbow cake, lots of gelato and Bryan’s ridiculously good fried shrimp (I stopped counting how many I ate…it was a bad scene.)
  2. Watching Audrey and her dad go out in the sea kayak (my sea kayak experience was not so good…let’s just say I fell out twice, hit my head and lost my sunglasses, so it’s not going on the list.)
  3. A completely potty trained Millie (YAY!)
  4. Staying in our swim suits all day
  5. A picnic dinner followed by wiffle ball and freeze tag.
  6. A grown-up dance party
  7. Replacing work shoes with flip flops, TV with books and our car with bikes
  8. Making drip castles
  9. Eggs Benedict (my favorite) twice in one week
  10. Watching Bryan morph into Jacques Cousteau (he and Audrey were completely obsessed with all manner of sea life...)

It was a good trip friends…our best vacation yet. We are refreshed -- I don’t think I realized how much we needed the time away.

Hope your week was fantastic!

And now for the winner for the gorgeous Bosquez necklace… It’s Amelia. Congrats and drop me a line with your contact info!

Thanks for all the lovely comments…such a fun vacation send off ;-)

Just One Thing

mociun + corwin tote...

For the past couple of years, I've tried to hone in on a single Earth Day "resolution" of sorts. Last year, I decided to completely eschew paper towels, and (not to be dramatic) it was a bit, well... life changing. Namely it gave me confidence that I could go without something that I'd previously thought was so essential to our every day existence. (Let's just say I was awfully addicted to paper towels friends.)

I've struggled to come up with something similarly specific this year and instead keep veering toward broad ideas like "buy less/make more"... So I'm settling on a goal that is frankly a smidge embarrassing and mundane. Here goes:

I'm vowing to not take a single bag from the store all year.

Now maybe you're thinking, "What? Reusable bags? That's so 2003." And yes, I agree wholeheartedly, it's not exactly something exciting and new. But here's the thing, I still haven't mastered it. While I'm good about bringing my own bags roughly 50% of the time, and I'm often jamming small purchases in my purse (much to the dismay of the cashier), I still struggle with remembering them for the big shopping trips, resulting in a glut of plastic bags that is completely bumming me out.

So this goal is going to be more about some creating sort of mechanism for remembering the darn things. (I'm open to any and all suggestions here...)

So what about you friends, are you setting any goals for Earth Day? What's your "one thing" this year?

p.s. I'll be back from the beach Monday with photos aplenty + I'll announce the winner of the 1000th post giveaway (there's still time to leave a comment for a chance to win that killer necklace...)

Loving... (on a wednesday)

We're still away at the beach (bliss), but I wanted to pop in to share this week's "loving' list...

First up, this crazy cool Marni-esque necklace via table tonic. (Thanks Laura!) I'm thinking hubby is going to need to make me some wood pieces so I can try my hand at one of these beauties...how fun with a simple sundress for Summer, no?

Every single one of the things above for the girlie's rooms (via my guest post last week over on Smaller...)

Another perfect teepee (via varpunen)...This one might my be my absolute fave (especially perched atop that striped rug.)

Starlet Charm's sweet little camel...(note, the camel was Audrey's favorite, I'm actually partial to the elephant on beige string, in case you're wondering ;-)

This gorgeous "snake eyes" cuff (yep still obsessed with Dream Collective) + how stunning is their homepage...

The most clever, cool kid's party ever...I've had this one bookmarked for a while. It's just so completely genius.

Seriously pretty paper garland. I don't think I'll ever tire of garland in all its incarnations. (This beauty from Shakshuka is currently hanging over Millie's daybed...I'll share a photo soon.)

Scenes from A Vacation

We are here... Suffice to say, posting might be a little light this week ;-)

Hope your weekend was splendid + don't forget about the 1000th post giveaway!

1000th Post + A Giveaway

So this is my 1000th post here on Simple Lovely, which really kinda blows me away actually...

When I started this blog a few years ago, I had no expectations of what it would become. I just knew I wanted to create a little place to chronicle some thoughts on the often overlooked aspects of everyday life, to sort of keep an inspiration board -- a collection of things that were lovely and interesting and thoughtful. I also wanted to create a space that felt like mine, which admittedly sounds a little strange but with two little ones (I started the blog right after Millie was born) and a full-time job, I was especially needing a place just for me...

And then I "met" all of you, and this space became something more... The comments and e-mails, the friendships, the shared ideas, the blogging community, all amaze me daily (multiple times a day even.) It's you guys that make blogging so fun and rewarding and inspiring.

And for that I thank you... from the bottom of my heart.

I thought it would be fun to do a little giveaway to mark my 1000th post and wracked my brain for what would be appropriate for the occasion. Then, as if by fate, the lovely Marisa of Bosquez Jewelry (remember this gorgeous necklace) wanted to offer something to my readers, and the perfect solution presented itself...another one of those lovely serendipitous moments,no? (Thank you Marisa!)

So just leave a little comment on this post by next Friday, April 23rd at midnight for a chance to win the insanely cool crystal bridge necklace above, and thank you for reading and inspiring and making this whole blogging thing so much fun!
