Scenes from The Week-End and A Bluesy Monday

The girlies playing outside after days of rain...maybe it was the endless rain that kicked off my funk??

The weekend was lovely and busy and filled with all sorts of nice moments with friends old and new. The girlies had a splendid time at the museum on Friday, busy little bees, jumping from one activity to the next -- taking turns playing the violin, exploring the place, making crowns...

Actually, I'm not sure that the parents didn't have more fun making crowns than the kids... We were pretty into it, I'm just saying.

So after a perfectly lovely weekend, I found myself in a bit of a funk mid-day yesterday. Not sure why, but just feeling bluesy, un-inspired and maybe a smidge burned out. I'm doing a lot of little things right now, and (it feels like) nothing well. First there was all the wallpaper indecision, then yesterday afternoon I attempted to make a necklace, but it was a total bust... I abandoned mission and set to work on dinner instead only to turn out a perfectly average meal. Needless to say, I went to bed feeling rather blah. I was determined to start fresh today, but we all woke up late, I dropped my peanut butter english muffin face down on my newly dry-cleaned black skirt and I'm having a bad hair day.

The week is not off to a good start friends... What do you do to get out of a funk? I need my mojo back.

Well, one of the things I would do to get out of a funk is come look at your lovely life and blog, Joslyn... but I guess that's not gonna work for you in this case! Other ideas: getting one really painful thing off my to do list. Having a long giggly snuggle session with my 2-year-old girlie. Setting up a get together with a friend. Populating my calendar with upcoming local events. Baking. Surprising my husband by doing one of his chores for him. A new magazine. Hope you're feeling more up by now.

Do a solitary activity, away from your family. Even a trip to the grocery store. It gives you a nice mental regrouping time. Coming home and viewing a scene of the kids playing with their dad or doing an activity always gives me a renewed perspective, seeing my family operate without me. For a very brief moment I can feel like an outsider looking in, and it makes me appreciate them all that much more. OR conversely, have a dance party with your family then afterwards sit down and relax with some treats. You can't really feel blah when you are dancing like a goofball with your kids.

yoga. definitely.

The english muffin would have set anyone back. A little break at a coffee shop to read a book/magazine always helps me de-funk. Hope your day is getting better!

take a bubble bath

or

go for a bike ride and enjoy this beautiful Dallas day.

or

go lay in the grass with your girlies and watch the clouds pass by

I don't want to sound like an absolute Debby-Downer, but sometimes when I'm in a total funk all I need to do is cry. It may be for 20 seconds and other times I need to take 5 minutes and get in the shower because it's a personal sob fest. I know that sounds so girlie and hyper-sensitive, but it works sometimes. My other suggestion would be to get in a 20 - 30 minute workout. Even if you feel like crap when you're done, you've at least burned a couple hundred calories!

I was in a funk yesterday too. Sometimes I think the best thing to do is just accept it and go through the motions (getting unpleasant tasks done is sometimes good since you're already in a bad mood!) and hope you wake up feeling better the next morning. Luckily, it worked for me.

Oh, how I feel for you!! Your english muffin mishap would've pushed me over the edge. Honestly, these are things that usually happen to me on a Tuesday! (Tuesday = not the beginning of the work-week, not "hump day," not the exciting day before Friday and not lovely Friday itself, so I have therefore deemed them completely useless and totally annoying.) So, to get myself out of a typical Tuesday funk, I usually load my iPod with songs I love, take a loooong walk and rock out in my own little world. If that doesn't work, I buy myself flowers and tell my husband to order out! :)

I am much of the same situation. Very blue today, so I am trying to talk to my friends and just holding onto the hope that tomorrow will be better.

Also, I plan on keeping my evening very mellow and simple to help me avoid any disasters that might make my lousy mood rollover into tomorrow.

I hope you get to feeling better!

Turn the music up really loud and dance around the house or go for a really long stroll with no music at all, take deep breaths and focus on the beauty around you. Sounds cheesy, but never fails me.

What I do??

Music helps me out of a funk. I put some favorite tunes on shuffle, sit with a cup of coffee or some green tea and look at a mag/ or blog.

Have a tea party with a Eleanor.

Take a brisk walk with the dog who will love me for the balance of the day.

By the way, sometimes you need a funky day to appreciate the good days, which we all have so many more of.

Good Luck.

Only because it's something no one has mentioned... I clean. It's so not glamourous or personal but if I take my frustration to srubbing the sh*t out of something I tend to feel better. And it's easier to relax and de-stress afterwards (for me) in an clean and orderly environment.

I tell a friend or coworker and then laugh away my blues with stories of their worst day/funk ever.

Will it make you feel better if I tell you about my shoe week from he** last week? I ripped the heel tip off a pair of heels on the cobblestone walkway at work, and then when my foot wobbled on a new pair of platforms the whole top of the shoe separated from the sole! I had to hammer in two nails (left over from hanging pictures) into the shoe just to leave the building! No one even came over to see what the ruckus was about.

I'm pretty sure this place is cursed...

Ugh, why is that peanut butter or toothpaste inevitably seem to end up on newly cleaned clothes?!

I always try to find time to do some yoga when I'm feeling down or even just a walk somewhere can help.

Hope that the week improves!

I have those days too...I think most of us do whether we confess it or not :) I try to go to bed early on those days and imagine how the next will go in my head. Thinking about all that I am grateful for also helps. Last, I peruse my binder chock full of inspirational tears from mags and all the sudden I'm jolted out of my slump.

cindy -- you made me feel better already. i'm laughing out loud picturing you hobbling into the building (in a nice way of course ;-)

I always find a good cry and a bubble bath do the trick. I always think that those times I feel blue are my body's way of saying, hey take a moment out and slow down and breathe.

Hope you are back to your wonderful self quickly.

Love your blog, it is really inspirational.

Oh, I am so sorry you are having a funky day my dear....I understand completely. Sometimes just treating myself right or getting outside in the sunshine(when there is some L:) helps. Here is hoping tomorrow is a LOT less blue for you.

Ugh. Sorry the start to your week was less than sunny. I've had a face down piece of bread incident more than a few times, and it ticks me off every time it happens.

I wish I could pour you a glass of wine! My father-in-law brought such a lovely bottle.

Head up!

Hi! I've read your blog before but never commented. Whenever I'm down, which in this economy and job situation it's hard not to be, I go to the gym. The exercise and endorphins always make me feel better and give me some time to think things through. A bike ride is always nice as well, especially while the days are still warm and pretty. Hope things get better.

Where exactly did you get your black walnut slab in upstate NY? I assume you had it shipped to you. Looks like you might be in Cali - can you speak to the slab & shipping costs? I have 2 other friends in Denver who are sitting w/ me -- we have all separately thought about this project. We concur that the researching of the source/shipping seems to be the biggest obstacle. Thanks for any help (Bryan:).

Hi Anne. We are fortunate enough to have a local hardwood dealer (run by a childhood friend, no less) who could source the slab and arrange for kiln-drying and transport to Dallas. Most big cities have a hardwood dealer or two, but you have to wade through a bunch of flooring dealers before you find one. Starting there might be your best option. However, if you can't find one in Denver, you can go the online route. I'll send you a mail with a few dealers from the classifieds of Fine Woodworking mag and some tips. Total cost for us to get the 92 inch long by 36 - 54 inch wide slab was about $1500 with kiln-drying and shipping. Good luck! Bryan

hmmm- tried to get your email address from your profile, Anne - no luck. If you'd like a list of online slab dealers, send Joslyn a mail and I'll reply with said information. Bryan
