Some Unexpected "Slow"...

The culprit for our evening of candlelight -- Icy branches that fell on the power lines…

Yesterday had every reason to be hectic -- It was our first day back to work and school after a long holiday break, we had a couple of grumpy girlies, a doctor appointment and cold, icy weather… But just as things seemed to be headed down the expected path of normal weeknight semi-chaos, something potentially annoying but instead incredibly wonderful happened.

The power went out from 6p.m. until 3a.m.

Sure that meant we “lost” Millie a couple of times (she gleefully tore from room to room in the dark daring us to seek her out with a flashlight -- that child is fearless…), but it also meant that we were forced to basically chuck all plans, tv watching, e-mail checking, kitchen cleaning and instead be fully, completely and totally in the moment.

We read in front of the fire while munching on clementines. We played in Audrey’s room with loads of candles blazing… It all felt very little house on the prairie and very slow and well just a nice break from what we expected.

Which is really the best thing of all, no?

It's a sign - slow down or a tree will take out your power lines and force you to slow down and enjoy yourself! Maybe we should all unplug more often, without resorting to the tree part.

Melissa and I were JUST talking about slow living on the phone this morning! We're ready to go out and cut down our neighborhood power lines (and yet, here I am on the computer)...

I think the power going out is a modern gift. On of my most memorable evenings of the past few years was an evening when the power went out. It was forced me to stop and enjoy the evening instead of working as I had planned.

Thanks for sharing your experience, as it has brings back the warm glow of nice memories

I love those times, as a child when the lights went out and the candles were lit, my parents would share stories from there past and we would all curl up next to each other and ask questions... we where never sad when the lights went out!

I've really been enjoying your blog (just haven't posted a comment). I've heard so much about you from our friend, Miss Aimee that I feel like I know you. She's convinced me to start my blog, just as you convinced her... funny, huh?

I'd love to add you to my blog reads list if you don't mind!

There is something so magical about candlelight. I'm tempted to "unplug" tonight because your relaxed family-time last night sounds so very wonderful.

I always feel like that when the power goes out - it's such a bummer when the lights come back on and you feel obligated to join the world again!
