Spending Hiatus – Week Eight

Audrey performing some modern dance while wearing a dress from Amy’s brilliant shop Peek Aren’t You Curious – seriously the best kid’s store ever…

p.s. my friend
Ben animated Audrey's dance routine...take a peek.

This week was better than last in that I didn’t cheat. We were busy, so that helped. There was our couples book club on Friday evening, a full day at The Nasher with Audrey on Saturday, a birthday party, plus working with my new “client”… Yep, it’s time for the big reveal; my fun new project is I’ve been hired to help decorate a very cool house in our neighborhood, which, given my “secret” dream job, is pretty darn exciting.

I’ve been collaborating with my client to make the ultra-modern space feel a little warmer, specifically the master bedroom and living areas. Since we both have full time jobs (and 5 kiddos between the two of us), we’ve been squeezing in shopping trips and planning a few hours each weekend for the past month or so, and yesterday we finally began putting together the bedroom… I have to say it’s looking pretty great. I’ll share some before and after photos soon.

Now back to the hiatus. Despite doing well last week, I’m starting to get itchy…The weather is warming up, and I’m jonesing for some new t-shirts, perhaps a little dress or two. But I’m holding firm.

How did you guys do this week?

Ugh, please come help finish my house. I'll pay you in those NYT chocolate chip cookies. :)

I cheated. I had a stressful week at work and found that a little something pretty for myself was absolutely necessary for my mental health. Nothing outside of the one pretty, though.

I can't wait to see what you do with your client. Also that dress is adorable.

Oooh, fun new job! Will we get to see any details?
I'm actually holding up okay, although I have a list of things I would like to buy, once this is over.

Oh! She is adorable! And I would love your "secret" dream job too. That is awesome that you get to explore it! I can't wait to see and hear more about it.

I am desperately trying to come up with something creative to do to complement my 9-5 non-profit job! So I am quite jealous:)

Ho hum, this week was a bad one. Mostly returned though, but still. I'm such a weakling! Better from now on.

And I want to go outside and dance like that now.

You daughter is adorable, and that dream job sounds amazing- congrats!

I had to make my first big confession this week when a shirt I had been lusting after showed up at a second hand store for $10. It is now in my closet. I agree that the spring weather is killing me, because I really want to go out and get new dresses and skirts, and light sweaters, and cute shorts, and...but I guess that all can wait until April, right? Over halfway there!

But I am so making a list of "things to buy" when week 12 gets closer. :)

I'm finding it hard to believe that I've actually made it through 8 weeks & while the cute spring clothing is tempting the forecasted snow here in CO is reminding me that I wouldn't even be able to wear that stuff until at least April so I mine as well wait for some of it to go on sale ;-) A related NY Times article that is interesting: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/10/us/10reset.html?hp I'll be interested to see if people keep up with the mindful buying after their finances etc stabilize...I'm hoping that I can keep it up as it definitely does feel nice to actually give some thought to my purchases & what I really do/don't need instead of acting on impulse & then feeling guilty!

Is it possible to break to nonessential spending habit entirely? I feel as though I've recovered and moved on? Could it be?

Your new project sounds exciting! I think it is great to do things apart from one's day job. Technically I do what I 'love' everyday but I get A LOT of satisfaction out of doing similar projects on my own and not for 'the man'. Plus, I am secretly an interior decorator stuck in an architect's body.

I am jonesing for new springy clothes as well. But that's a whole other issue. ;)

If I pictured in my mind what it means and feels like to be Audrey's age it would be the photos above. sweet.

Congrats on your new project! I actually am an interior designer, and it's true, it is pretty fantastic. I love that you mentioned that you would like to be a designer so that you can walk with your clients through their journey in creating a space that they love to live in. My favorite part of my job is working with people and creating a story with them. And getting to see their faces when they walk into the room after all is said and done - mmm, words cannot describe!
