The Spending Hiatus -- Week Four

Well I’m sad to report that I failed again this week.

F.A.I.L.E.D. Again.

Geeze, what kind of Spending Hiatus ringleader am I?? I’m just going to own up…no excuses, no long winded justification.

I bought a vintage necklace at the Atlantis Home/Sea of Shoes trunk show at V.O.D.* last week.

I will say (and this isn’t justifying, I promise) that I love it and have worn it four times (!) since purchasing it exactly a week ago.

Ok that’s all…short, sweet and to the point. How did you guys do?

* The trunk show was actually pretty fantastic. V.O.D. is perfection – the space, the clothes, the Allison V. Smith photos adorning the walls… all of it. Oh and the people watching wasn't bad either.

  1. Enough with the guilt. That necklace is stunning. So special and unique. Enjoy it. Life is too short for anything less.

  3. Okay, I know I am being an enabler saying this but, it is SO beautiful! And you look SO pretty! (secretly, I am glad you bought it for yourself) and I am not judging you at all. :)

  5. totally worth it, LOVE that necklace!

  6. Could you be any more gorgeous?

That totally doesn't count because technically they should have paid you with free jewelry to model that necklace.

  7. it's stunning - how could you not. And I totally agree with Shayna - they should have paid you to model it :)

As for my hiatus, er, well I did buy a new wallet from Pratten. They are have a shipping deal to the US so technically I saved some money....?

  10. I was terrible. My mom and I were invited to "preview" the body by victoria line of bras. I caved and bought one and a few other things. I guess you can say that a bra is a worthwhile purchase, esp a comfy one?

  11. Gorgeous necklace! In my opinion, vintage can always be justified, since if you don't get it when you see it, you'll probably never have the chance again!

  12. I take full responsibility for your purchase--kind of made you buy it! But is awesome so I am happy I did!!It looks great!

  13. Ever since I first heard about the spending hiatus, I've thought it was a BRILLIANT idea, but I knew I would never be able to do it. I would do exactly something like this and would fret and fawn over something lovely and end up buying it.

But, think of all the extra consideration that goes into buying something. Sure, you bought an amazing necklace and "broke" the hiatus, but I wouldn't say this exercise is so much about complete deprivation than figuring out better consumer values.

All in all, still a lovely necklace.

  14. i was about to say I rocked it but then I remembered I bought a book. definitely not as cool a purchase as your gorgeous necklace. spending hiatus be damned! okay, I'm climbing back on the horse and will totally kill it this week.

  16. dreadfully awful....bracelet, earrings, and a pendant...not to mention a book, mascara (that i didn't really need) and some fun t-shirts. sheez! i'm going to get voted off the island.

  17. I was naughty yesterday. I bought a lamp for my youngest boy. It is blue and has funky animal designs in green on it. He LOVES animals and his current lamp is a transportation one exactly the same as his brother's one (L loves transportation). It wasn't even on sale. But I wanted something just for J, something individaul that speaks of his interests.

PS I love your necklace, stunning I would have fought you for it!

  18. It is gorgeous, though. And it's so hard to resist vintage pieces because you can't give yourself a waiting period.

  19. It happens to the best of us! That necklace is fabulous! Of course the interior decorator in me is loving the view I can see of your house! Love the lamp, the mirror, etc., etc.!

  21. My roommate and I have a spending hiatus (1y and 6m respectively) with permission to buy secondhand or to make things. We both agreed before we started that buying vintage/secondhand is a great compromise!

Good luck!! And enjoy your beautiful necklace!

  22. I couldn't agree to a no spending hiatus for even a day, so I'm extremely impressed you went this long!

The necklace is freaking fantastic(as is every necklace you post) and you should have bought the ring from a few posts ago too!;)

  23. It's so difficult to blame you for this! I've been good this week. I hope to last through the end of April though!

  24. totally justifiable! it's such a gorgeous piece and it looks amazing on you. if you were going to cheat, you picked a great item to cheat with :)

  25. I don't see how you could have not bought it. It was worth every penny.

Lovely necklace and don't beat yourself up over getting it. BUT, I do need to know about your top - I love the cut. Mind charing where you got it/ who makes it? Thanks.

  29. I agree, that necklace is stunning. I adore it. Well worth the self-agony.

  30. bservaites -- the top is miu miu from a couple of seasons ago...snagged on super sale at a shop here in Dallas.

  31. things are going ok - i originally was just going to do a one month shopping pay, but a subsequent pay cut at work made me extend it for the foreseeable future. i might "treat" myself with a dress from the liberty for target line, but otherwise, i'll be shopping my closet this spring.

and that necklace is lovely - well worth the splurge.

  32. joslyn? this is hard. i don't like this no-shopping nonsense one bit. i'm quite afraid that this is all going to backfire on me because i am saving photos of things I want to purchase come April left and right. um... i don't think that's the point of all this. i will need to conjure up some serious willpower once this month is done so i don't find myself in a spiral out of control...

ps -- I LOVE that necklace. so worth it.

  33. While I have not officially participated in your non-spending spree (hmm, I just created that oxymoron)-- I can appreciate everyone's efforts.
However, maybe you can consider that you failed upwards in buying a beautiful piece of jewelry. Enjoy it. We're only human.
